A very common question, and a physiological inevitability. The ability to focus at near occurs when the lens in our eyes changes with contraction and relaxation of ciliary muscles. As we age the ciliary muscles in our eyes, which support the accommodative process, starts to loose some flexibility. This loss in flexibility and accommodation is commonly referred to as presbyopia.
